Dave Cole started King of the Hammers 10 years ago with his former partner Jeff. He first got involved in the rock crawling scene as a way to spend some quality time with his son. Dave ended up joining a team, and actually went on to win the World Finals during his rookie year competing. Afterwards he dropped back from the rock crawling scene for a bit due to the fact that it is difficult to find sponsors.
The massive, week long event provides competitions each day of the week, starting off with the King of the Motos for the motocross racers, and ending with the iconic King of the Hammers race on Friday. Catering to a multitude of enthusiasts, from UTVs to Southern Rock Racers, the King of the Hammers has become the place for off-road enthusiasts and families, with turn out around 30 thousand people every year.
After much debate and deliberation, Dave and Jeff decided on the idea of King of the Hammers, and made the choice to have the inaugural event that year. Now, 10 years later, the event has become one of the largest complete with live coverage, a movie, and a race series (Ultra4). With the number of registrants growing each year, and folks coming from all over the world to compete, it’s safe to say that the event is a success.
The racing isn’t the only fun thing happening on the lake bed during King of the Hammers. Each year “Hammertown” pops up to accommodate the mass of enthusiasts, racers, and families who turn up for the event.
